I hold my hands up, I admit it- I’m a self-confessed planning freak! If I had £1 for every time I sat down and set out a this is how I’m going to achieve X plan, I’d have a small fortune and could employ someone to plan on my behalf.
All the task apps, content schedulers, bullet journals, news aggregators, excessive time blocking, and the list goes on, only leads to one thing, a headache. I think I spend more time updating these tools than actually doing what I’ve set myself to do on them.
The thing is, I think I secretly enjoy the planning phase. Obviously, I need to plan the direction of my blog and social media, then there is our removal company. My planning sessions usually feature ways to grow these businesses. I’ll form strategies and set allocated times to do the tasks or habits I think are necessary. I get galvanised to implement my new master plan each time and usually I’ll last a few days and then reality and unplanned events get in the way. Suddenly you find yourself staring at an endless task list and nothing has been done.
This morning, it occurred to me that perhaps I should simplify. I deleted all the recurring task reminders and decided to focus on today and tomorrow. Yes, I still have my overall goals, these require certain routines, but there needs to be an element of flexibility. Sometimes, the best plan is a simple one. The steps you take need to feel natural and fit in with the other elements of your life, consistency is key. I find the more I set myself, the less I get done.
I’m still a certified app junkie so those will still feature. Personally, I use:
One note- for blog posts and journaling, love this app!
Google keep – for random ideas and lists that can be scheduled as and when
Google calendar – for events (I was also adding recurring tasks here, but I’ve decided to stop that)
Google tasks – for daily to-dos (I’m going to get rid of this as well)
These are just my productivity apps, social media is a whole other issue. If you’re interested in that let me know.
In a nutshell, I am going to simply plan what I’m doing tomorrow in my calendar and be done with it. This will free up more time for doing!
Would love to know how you organise your time. Or, if you just take each day as it comes.
