Summer skincare routines: Achieving a healthy summer glow
Welcome back to my summer lifestyle blog series! In this installment, we’ll dive into the world of skincare and learn how to adapt our routines to the sunny season. As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, our skin requires some extra care and attention. So let’s explore the impact of summer on our skin and uncover the secrets to achieving a healthy summer glow.
First and foremost, it’s crucial for me to understand how summer affects my skin. The increased heat and humidity can lead to excess oil production, clogged pores, and breakouts. On the other hand, prolonged sun exposure can cause damage, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. That’s why it’s essential for me to modify my skincare routine to address these specific concerns.
One of the most important steps in any summer skincare routine is sunscreen, well all year round actually. Sun protection is a non-negotiable part of my daily regimen. I use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, and I must remember to apply it generously. My favourite is the Eucerin Oil Control in SPF 50, linked below.
In addition to sunscreen, a lightweight moisturiser is a must during the summer months. You can opt for oil-free or gel-based moisturisers that provide hydration without feeling heavy on the skin. These formulations help maintain the skin’s moisture balance while preventing clogged pores and breakouts.
If like me you struggle with excess oiliness, consider incorporating products that help control shine. I look for oil-absorbing ingredients like salicylic acid or mattifying powders to keep my skin looking fresh throughout the day- more on powders in Saturday’s post on Summer Makeup. For oily skin, a good clay mask helps to reduce the shine. I’ve used the L’Oréal clay masks for a long time! On the other hand, if your skin tends to become dry during the summer, perhaps consider adding a hydrating serum or sheet mask to your routine to provide that extra boost of moisture.
Staying hydrated from within is just as important as taking care of my skin externally. We should drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep our skin hydrated and maintain its natural glow. It’s also a good idea to incorporate water-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet to further support skin health.
When it comes to achieving a healthy summer glow, it’s essential for me to strike a balance between protecting my skin from harmful UV rays and embracing a sun-kissed complexion. Instead of roasting in the sun all the time, I opt for tinted moisturizers to provide a light coverage and even my skin tone.
Remember, any good skincare routine should also include a thorough cleansing routine to remove sweat, dirt, and excess oil from your skin. A gentle cleanser twice a day to keep the pores clean and prevent breakouts… more on that in another post.

By modifying our skincare routine to suit the summer season, we can protect and nourish our skin while enjoying the sun’s warmth. We should remember to stay hydrated, protect our skin from harmful UV rays, and incorporate lightweight and oil-free products into our regimen. With these tips, we’ll be well on our way to achieving a healthy summer glow that lasts all season long.
