To say I’ve been obsessed with jumper dresses would be an understatement, all you have to do is look at my Pinterest and you will see a whole load of the knit stuff. For me they are the perfect autumn winter outfit. You can be layered up all warm and cosy plus, throw on a pair of over the knee boots and you can still be stylish. I especially love them with oversized coats or even a chunky statement scarf. From loose to fitted there’s a style to suit everyone and every occasion.
As usual on my blog, I’ve tried to track down ones that are both good quality and affordable. That means I’ve been looking for natural fabrics like Wool, Mohair and Cotton, but also sustainable fibres Tencel and recycled polyester.
Yes, polyester, buying brand new polyester should be avoided, it incentivises brands to use it and it is actually made of the same stuff used to make plastic bottles. Every time you wash it, there’s potential fog micro plastics to get in to the water supply and therefore the sea – not good at all! That said, we have the stuff all around us still widely being used so rather than throwing it all out to be loaded on to a scrap heap somewhere we should try to get as much use out of these things as possible and buy recycled materials where we can.
The above in mind, natural fabrics are often a little more pricey so, I get that we need to accommodate our budgets (me included). Here’s my edit of some of the quality jumper dresses on the high street.
H&M have outdone themselves this year. The premium knits are plenty, but I thought I’d give this number a special mention as it has the extra side split detail. It’s wool so bound to keep you warm, but if you want to sex it up a bit you could add a lovely lace slip underneath.
Uniqlo definitley stood out on the affordable quality front. The dress I am wearing is the Lambs Wool one in Beige below. This dress is definitely a winter warmer. I wore it out without a coat but made the mistake of layering a jersey dress underneath, I nearly melted. I’m always hot anyway, but for all you cold types this is one for you. I’ll be shopping at Uniqlo for more basics going forward.
Not technically a dress but it looks long enough to count for us shorties out here. This Breton knit from G-Star is made from Cotton Recycled Polyester and Tencel and I think it’s fab. It’s a little pricey, but we need to incentivise brands to produce sustainable options. When they see increased demand they may be inclined to invest in the manufacturing processes thereby reducing costs and potentially the charge passed on to us.
I really hope you’ve enjoyed this post, it was fun to make. If you are interested in a brand that has sustainability as an ethos, check out MAMOQ. This stands for Meaning, Accountability, Material, Opportunity and Quality and are the tenets the brand believes should sit behind our purchases.
