In my everyday life I find myself wearing many hats. Girlfriend, Analyst, Business Partner, Family Member and now Blogger. All these things pretty much need looking after on a daily basis and I haven’t even factored in life admin. How do I deal? How does anyone deal with all this?
The last year has thrown up some curveballs, some as recent as this week, but I’ve systematically learned, through trail and error over the years, how to cope. If you’re in the same situation, it might not even be as many things as I deal with, it could be more – either way here’s a few tips on how to get through.
Park it – Sometimes the best way to deal with a problem is to ignore it. Well not completely, but put it to one side and then designate a time where you can actually stand back and take an objective view of the situation and formulate a plan. I’ve so often let problems consume me, I’ve been in floods of tears only to stop crying and realise the problem still exists and all I’ve achieved in sorting it out is wasted time. Put your troubles to one side and keep it moving with everything else until you are in the frame of mind to properly deal with it.
A problem shared is a problem halved – Often it is difficult to confide in others about your problems. Whether it’s that you feel you will be judged or perhaps you simply don’t want to talk about it. For me it’s that I just forget. I’ve been so used to fixing my own problems I forget that I can ask others for help. Honestly for the most part I can fix them myself, but I’ve found confiding in someone else can make the process go so much faster. They might even help you see a way through that you would not have thought of.
Be careful who you confide in – you know that old saying, ‘too many cooks can spoil the broth’ well that applies to stress to. The last thing you need when your going through it is some foe friend there in the background giving you bad advice. Now I’m 30, I’ve pretty much cut these people out anyway, but anyone can slip up.
Relax – I mean physically, find the thing that cheers you up and do it. I like to soak in the bath with wine – I know it’s cliche, but it works for me.
Sleep – in stressful times the least you can do for yourself is be well rested. This will help you think more clearly and find a way out of the issue. I know some people have trouble sleeping and aside from those with an actual identified medical issue, I honestly believe you can train yourself in to sleeping better. I found my method naturally – when I have trouble getting to sleep, I have to leave my tv on (with barely hear it volume) I close my eyes and then look at the darkness i.e. it’s the sensation of staring at your own eyelids. Then if a thought enters my mind I think to myself ‘no star at the darkness’ – clearly this is boring which must be why I fall asleep. Again, some would say having the tv on doesn’t work, but each to their own. Lying there thinking ‘I’m never going to fall asleep’ clearly doesn’t work….
