  • Gratitude

Happy Sunday all. This week, I want to talk about the importance of gratitude and living in the present moment. I mentioned a while back, in my life update post that I’ve had a change of attitude following a podcast I was listening to. In a world so focused on the next moment, getting more, being better and ‘doing’ all the time, it’s easy to overlook the here and now.

This is a theme that is gaining more and more exposure. It’s for good reason also. Ultimately, people just want to be happy. The part we are all realising is that happiness is not some distant illusion to be lusted after, while you slog your way through grind-ville. Happiness is right now, in the present, if only we look to see the good in each moment. Here’s 3 tips that work for me in leading a life of gratitude:

Stop and just be – you can meditate if you want but for me this applies to ever situation. In the middle of the street, on a busy train, while your kids are screaming in the house – just stop, observe your surroundings, don’t think of the future or the past just that moment. Notice how you feel in the setting, listen and smell. Just take it all in and try to connect with the inner presence that sustains is all. I’m finding that there is beauty in every moment, now is all we have so why worry about later. This is called being present.

Be content – yes, be happy with what you have. No one is saying you can’t want better for yourself and take the necessary steps to get there, but we shouldn’t resent our current situation. It’s all a part of the process. This is where practicing gratitude can rely help. Everyday, I like the evening, try to say or write down 5 things you are grateful for. Journaling is a great place to gain clarity in your thoughts, I do it almost every day.

Give others your full attention – I’m sad to say that I’m really bad at this. Not because I don’t care, my mind just flits from one thing to the next and I can go from fully engaged to off in lala land in a split second. Like the first point, it’s all about being in the present moment. I aim to live my life in quest for knowledge and talking to others is a fast way to gain it. So many times I’ve spoken to someone and they’ve given a recommendation or said something that’s come up later- if you’re not paying attention, you might miss something crucial. Plus, it’s plain rude. I will be better….

I’d love to know if you’re practicing gratitude in your life and what you’re grateful for. Let’s chat in the comments.
