T Re: Kind Natured Hair Care and it’s Vegan

I was in Boots the other day, as I often am directly after payday, ha! I knew I needed shampoo and while I’ve been using the Creme of Nature brand fairly consistently since I started going natural, I though let’s see what’s on offer.

First of all, it’s great to see high street stores like Boots finally catering to the needs of ethnic minorities. Years ago, the only place you could get black hair products, at least where I lived, was from Asian stores on the local high street (usually in areas with a high ethnic population). I’m not sure why it was always an Asian shop, but honestly I’ve never seen a black person own/operate a black hair store in England. Anyway, I digress…

In the last 2 or 3 years, I really feel like mainstream stores have really started to open their eyes to the diversity in their customer base. A trend I hope continues, but there’s still a long way to go, I won’t even get in to the shelf space devoted to diverse product ranges, but let’s just say it’s lacking.

Of course, as a natural, my main concern for shampoo and conditioner is that they don’t contain chemicals that will dry out or damage my hair. I spotted the Kind Natured product range (click the link to see products in the range) and when I read the ingredients, I was pleased to note that it is free from sulphate, parabens and silicones. From reading the website, it’s also free from a few other nasties that weren’t even on my radar, such as Cocamide DEA – used to thicken soaps, and recognised in California as being a carcinogenic, yes girl! Check what you’re using y’all, just because ‘they’ say it’s safe, doesn’t mean it is at all. I’m putting my Creme of Nature in the bin!

Anyway, whilst I am convinced on the merits of using a free from shampoo and conditioner, it is becoming more and more accepted as good for european hair types also. Sulphate basically strips your hair if it’s natural oils. It’s been widely accepted as an ingredient in shampoos for years, likely because caucasian hair types produce more oil from the scalp and no one wants to walk around with greasy looking hair. That said, for Afro hair, the opposite is true we don’t tend to produce as much oil so sulphate is a big no no. This has always been the case, but the availability of sulphate free shampoo etc has really only become a ‘thing’ in the past ten years or so and now it’s becoming mainstream.

I really like the feel my hair has after using the Kind Natured Bamboo & Sea Kelp Shampoo and the Kind Natured Bamboo & Sea Kelp Conditioner (click the links to purchase). I chose the Love Curls range from the brand, made with Bamboo and Sea Kelp. I felt like my hair was clean from the shampoo without feeling stripped and the conditioner had just enough slip for a good shower detangle. The whole hair care range is vegan and the products are not tested on animals, a huge plus.

I really want to try what’s out there so, I’ll be sure to bring you more hair care reviews.
