After what was a blazing hot summer, here in London- we had multiple consecutive days of sunshine without rain, definitely not the norm, it’s finally time to start thinking about autumn/winter and the colder months. Specifically in the context of what to wear. By no means am I suggesting we should think about the likelihood of consecutive grey and wet days, but we do need to be prepared.
With the above in mind and seeing as I have a fair amount of down time on me commute to a meeting in Dublin, I thought I’d lay down some of the ideas I’m having for staple pieces to transition in to the new season and talk about layering. After all, I don’t think we are quite done with summer just yet and adding a few layers may be the best way to transition to the colder months.
The run up to autumn is definitely all about layering. The mornings and evenings are cooling off, so it’s important to wear multiple items to keep you warm on your commute, but that you can take off so you’re not melting by lunchtime.
Fine knitwear
Last winter I wish I had a lot more knitwear. I’m talking fine/thinner knits that are great for tucking in or wearing under a dress or gilet. This time round I want to get a few in black, white, beige and perhaps other neutral tones. If you follow my blog, you’ll know I’m currently cultivating a sophisticated chic style. Nothing says chic more than a neutral tone. As I’m planning ahead this year. My hope is to be able to get either cashmere or a blend. I want these jumpers to last me years, so I’m going to fork out to have the desired quality. Obviously, sometimes we need to work on a budget, so if my master plan fails and I can’t get multiple cashmere knits, I’ll go for the next best thing Cotton. As far as affordable cashmere, I’m loving M&S at the moment, they have cashmere knots starting at £75, a fraction of the price of higher end brands.

My wardrobe is severely lacking a good blazer. As with all staples you also need more than one. I currently have a navy blazer that I picked up from H&M years ago, but once again I want to upgrade. I am desperate for a tailored black blazer. One that fits like it was made for me and goes with everything. Blazers are great for layering. They also help to elevate your outfit. My favourite style is a definitely a shorter double breasted version. Something that cinches the waste and has structure. Oh course the Balmain wool version is the style I covet most, but in the vein of living within my means it’s a no. That said, once again M&S comes through for me, with a similar design, but the difference between Balmain’s fabulous wool and the polyester blend of the M&S one are blatant.
Layering tops
Of course if you’re layering you need a base. This is where you can have a bit of fun and ensure your under layer is still just about visible. I really love the whole look of layering knitwear over shirts especially more chunky knits. I don’t know, there’s just something about shirt tails and cuffs peaking out from under the hem and sleeves of a good knit. That said, you could also put on a fitted t-shirt with sleeve embellishments. Either way the idea is not to completely hide the under layer.
