  • What to do during the coronavirus

You’d literally have to be living at the bottom of the sea not to know about the coronavirus outbreak. It seems mass hysteria is sweeping the world, from the fake news to the panic buying, it’s all one big corona-mess. It goes without saying that we must think of the most vulnerable in this time. The elderly and the ill are most likely to face fatal impacts. We should also consider the poor who are likely to be impacted by the panic buying that’s going on.

Anyway, I’m no expert, so I think I’ll leave my opening statement there. The only thing that has been blindingly obvious to me is that it’s likely a good idea to go in to voluntary self-isolation, or social distancing. The idea is the old adage that prevention is better than cure. Yes I speak from my very privileged position of being on maternity leave and I spare many thoughts for those forced to go to work. That said, in order to stop this virus we all need to be mindful of catching it.

The government advice to wash our hands more frequently, using soap, is sage. That said, the best way to not catch this is to stay inside. Now I’m not saying to become a recluse, but perhaps limit your social interactions. There would be nothing worse for me than to contract the virus and then come home and give it to my partner and young baby. It’s just not worth it.

Of course the hardest bit is what the hell do you do inside with all that time? Here’s a few ideas

    • Side hustle- we now live in an age where the 9to5 is either no longer totally fulfilling or not lucrative enough. If like many employers yours has given you the opportunity to work from home, take advantage of the lack of commute and use the extra time you have to work on project. Whether it’s a hobby just for fun or something you’re hoping to build a future from, now is the time to start. I intend to ramp up my posting schedule here on the blog also. I think more simple style posts are on the way.
    • Get outside – I know, I’m talking about voluntary self-isolation and my second point is get outside. I mean literally get outside go to the park or head in to your garden. Open spaces are best if you really come down with a case of cabin fever.
    • Online shopping – now I’m not sure if deliveries will get to the point where they’re impacted, but until it is I’m literally ordering in everything! As a style blogger, I’m lucky that I can get stuff done in the house and pretty much work from home. So, I’m shopping for clothes online (let’s face it that’s what most people do anyway) but also amazon prime is my best friend.
    • Film, tv, youtube and reading – this is the most obvious. Sit down chill and get lost in some kind of media. I really like reading online publications such as those from Sheerluxe, Vogue and Net-a-porter.
    • Phone a friend – it’s perhaps a good idea to make use of that face time feature.
    • Video games – this goes for mobile games as well, they’re not just for boys btw, so thumbs at the ready.

I’d love to know how you’re passing the time. Obviously, I know for some, it’s not all fun and games. That’s said, for our own sanity we must find bits of joy. Hopefully my content can be somewhat of a distraction from the madness of it all.
